THE MAIDEN'S TOWER

In the Bosphorus, where East meets West, there is a tower set on a small mound close to the Asian shore.
This little tower, dating back 2,500 years, has borne silent witness to the entire history of the city from the sea.
On the south edge of the Bosphorus where it meets the Marmara Sea, there stands an attractive tower. Acting as a beacon to ships that pass through the Bosphorus at night, for centuries the little tower in the water has also been a source of inspiration for the poets of the city. Myths about the tower have increased its mystery and attraction and made it a popular tourist destination. Having become a symbol of istanbul, this historical structure was first the site of a tomb during the Greek period of the city, and then it was used as a customs house together with the building added during the Byzantine period. Maiden Tower's Story:
Maiden Tower's is a love story told by Ovid. The tower was the site of the forbidden love of Hero, a virgin in the Aphrodite temple, and a young man named Leandros, who lost his way trying to reach the tower on a stormy night, was overcome by thewaves and drowned in sorrow. Seeing her lover succumb to the waves, Hero threw herself from the tower into the Bosphorus. The most popular myth tells about a king who, fearing a prophecy that his beloved daughter would be bitten by a snake on her 18th birthday and die, decides to guard her safety by keeping her confined in this tower in the sea. Despite his efforts, destiny rules after a basket of fresh grapes is sent to the tower and a snake hidden at the bottom of the basket delivers the fatal bite.
Closed to the public for centuries, Maiden's Tower went through a comprehensive restoration and recently opened as a restaurant, cafeteria and bar. With its 360-degree views of istanbul and the Bosphorus, Maiden Tower is a popular visitation spot. It is open daily, and in the evenings, the restaurants on the ground floor offer delicious entrees from world cuisine.
There are boat services to the tower from Üsküdar-Salacak and Ortaköy during the day. At night, boat services from Üsküdar Salacak and Kabataş continue until late.
